Our client are a major educational institution in Edinburgh and they are currently looking to recruit a Biological Safety advisor to join their team. They are looking for someone who can give advice and guidance on current legislation, helping ensure compliance and current best practice in connection with work involving biological materials, including pathogen and biosecurity aspects as well as genetic modification.
Main Dutiesand Responsibilities
Acting as theBiological Safety Officer in relation to all genetic modification and pathogen work undertaken.
The ongoing development and evolution of relevant Parts of the Health and Safety Policy and supporting guidance and advice, in the light of changing legislative and associated requirements.
Responding, promptly and accurately, to individual queries on all aspects of biological safety, from all grades of staff and students regarding legal and practical aspects of health and safety during work involving genetic modification, pathogens, and other potentially hazardous biological materials.
Ensuring effective delivery, including provision where required, of appropriate biological safety training for all relevant staff and research students, in liaison with the Health and Safety Training and Audit Co-ordinator.
Planning the deployment of capital resources, in consultation with the Health and Safety directorate and administration, to ensure that the Biosafety Unit is appropriately resourced and equipped to provide a suitable quality of service.
Qualifications
A University graduate, probably from a biological sciences or medical background. A relevant postgraduate qualification would be a distinct advantage
The post-holder is required to have professional health and safety qualification(s) maintained by participating in a recognised scheme of continuing professional development.
Sufficient specialist training, experience and knowledge with regard to the management of biohazards are required, as is being fully conversant with health and safety legislation relating to biological safety issues
