Practise dentistry at one of our bases in the UK - or overseas, supporting our troops on operations.

Your work:

Overview

As a Dental Officer, you'll provide a high standard of dental care to RAF personnel, ranging from recruits on basic training courses to fast jet pilots. All RAF personnel receive dental care to ensure that they are fit for military service. At the core of this care programme is a preventative philosophy that gives high priority to dental screening and regular checks. RAF dentists carry out a full range of treatments in an environment which encourages and values high quality care. Older patients, for example, may present with complicated dental problems, requiring advanced clinical solutions. Young aircrew, on the other hand, may need treatment for problems such as impacted third molars.

Like most people in the RAF, you'll probably move jobs every few years, and each job is known as a tour. For most of your tours, you'll be based in a dental centre on an RAF base in the UK, supported by both RAF and civilian dental nurses. Depending on the size of your patient base, you may be the only dentist, or you may work in a multi-chair practice. The RAF also requires restorative dentists, orthodontists and oral surgeons; to work either in dental centres on bases or in military teams within NHS hospitals, and to provide a referral service for their colleagues in primary care. Within your first few years, you may be detached overseas, for anything from a few days to a few months. This could mean working on one of our overseas bases, carrying out routine dentistry for service personnel and their families, or providing primary dental care in the field. But whether you're working in a practice or under canvas, you'll have all the facilities and equipment you need.

Your first tour:

For your first tour, you'll be posted to a multi-chair practice to work with an experienced dentist. You'll be fully trained and supported to practise dentistry to the highest standards. Comprehensive clinical governance, including quality assurance and practice audit, are built into RAF working practices - and once you're experienced you'll have clinical freedom to give your patients the best possible care, while maximising RAF resources.

Your Training:

Initial Officer Training

Like all our officers, you'll begin your RAF career with Initial Officer Training at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire. You'll follow an 11-week course specially designed for professionally qualified entrants to the RAF. The course includes fitness development, military training and academic study as well as practical outdoor leadership challenges.

Specialist training

Experienced dentists go straight to their first posting after Initial Officer Training. But if you join the RAF as a newly qualified dentist, you'll follow a 12-month, nationally- recognized vocational training course, working with a highly-experienced, fully-accredited trainer. There are regular block-release courses at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire, with some course components taking place in Germany and Cyprus.

Ongoing development

As a Dental Officer, you'll have extensive opportunities for further professional development throughout your career. All our Dental Officers undertake at least 10 sessions of postgraduate education each year, and you'll be encouraged to study for the MFGDP qualification. As your career develops, you will also be able to work towards further postgraduate qualifications. Currently, there are RAF Dental Officers studying for Masters Degrees at the Eastman Dental Institute and qualifying as enhanced general practitioners in disciplines such as periodontology and advanced conservation. Professional training pathways leading to consultant status are also funded by the Ministry of Defence to meet our clinical requirements.

Your future:

Career prospects

You'll join the RAF as a Flight Lieutenant on a Short Commission of six or seven years, and you can expect to be promoted to Squadron Leader after five years accredited service (time spent in civilian practice may count towards seniority). If everything goes well and you would like to extend, you can apply for selection for a Medium Commission for a maximum of 18 years. Further promotion to the rank of Wing Commander and beyond is by competitive selection, and you may apply for your commission to be extended until the age of 58.

Transferable skills

As a Dental Officer in the RAF, you'll have all the development opportunities and career prospects available to your civilian counterparts, together with the chance to work around the world and gain unique dental and personal experiences. Most Dental Officers go into civilian practice when they decide to leave the RAF.
