Job Title: Assistant Director of Nursing (Full Time)

Location: St Margaret of Scotland Hospice

Professional Accountability: Chief Executive/Director of Clinical Services

Managerial/Educational Accountability: Chief Executive/Director of Clinical Services

Qualifications: The Post Holder should be a First Level Registered Nurse, educated to Degree Level possessing recognised qualifications in Palliative Care.



The Hospice provides high quality care to the older person, the terminally ill and others with particular medical needs. The Hospice has first class facilities and is staffed by trained and dedicated employees, who are supported, by specialist staff and administration.

The Hospice applies the highest standard of care to enhance the quality of life of patients in a warm and friendly environment: Patients are encouraged to assume personal responsibility and independence within their physical and emotional capabilities. The involvement of patients, families and friends is encouraged, together with activities inside and outside the Hospice.

Job Summary

 The Post holder provides leadership, direction and support to the nursing workforce and is responsible for ensuring that the highest possible professional nursing standards are set and maintained.
 The post-holder will ensure that all housekeeping and catering services are delivered efficiently and effectively to the patients.
 He/she will be a member of the Senior Management Team led by the Chief Executive and will take an active part in ensuring the Hospice remains at the forefront of the challenging agenda for palliative care providers.
 He/she will act as the nominated person to ensure compliance with the National Care Standards for the Hospice Care set by the Care Commission.

Skills and Experience

The post holder should have skills and experience of working in Palliative Care and promoting a Palliative Care approach. The post holder should be competent in the management of physical, emotional, spiritual and social symptoms, have effective communication and interpersonal skills along with experience of multidisciplinary working.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

Managerial

1. Ensure the delivery of effective high quality care in an environment which is welcoming and homely and which takes into account the needs and wishes of individual patients and their families.

2. Ensure that the traditional values, Core Values and Mission of the Organisation which are reflected in the care and support, provided to patients and their families remain at the forefront of our thinking.

3. Maintain the culture of continuous quality improvement at all levels and in particular ensure with the National Care Standards for Hospice Care set by the Care Commission, the CSBS Clinical Standards for Specialist Palliative Care and other agreed standards, national and local.

4. Participate in budget preparation and be responsible for the control of budgets within the designated areas of responsibility ensuring financial resources are appropriately utilised in all designated areas.

5. Contribute to the development and review of all policies and procedures both clinical and non-clinical.

6. Initiate and participate in uni-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary and inter agency clinical audit and research.

7. In consultation with other senior staff, ensure compliance with all statutory requirements.

8. Play a full part in promoting a better understanding of palliative care in general and the role of the Hospice in particular.

9. Contribute to local and national initiatives in palliative care, whilst ensuring the effective discharge of responsibilities to the Hospice.

10. Ensure Ward Managers have formulated appropriate plans of care for all patients and that such plans of care are shared with all staff, are reviewed and adhered to

11. Ensure active participation at ward reports to ensure appropriate sharing of information and promoting palliative care based on current research.

12. Ensure the needs of relatives/ carers are met at all times, meeting relatives/ carers daily.

13. Ensure the Hospice environment is maintained to a high standard and that all equipment is well maintained with any faults identified and rectified, liaising with ward Managers to promote this as well as Head of Maintenance.

14. Ensure Ward Managers maintain effective accurate records of equipment maintenance.

15. Ensure security procedures of the Hospice are maintained by all departments at all times.

16. Liaise with Unit Managers to ensure Risk Assessments are current and reflective of safe practice as per Hospice Risk Management Strategy.
