Full Description:
Student Nurse (Adult) - Worldwide Postings
Receive nurse training and play a key role in RAF medical services.
Your work
Overview
As a Student Nurse (Adult), you’ll train for three years to provide high standards of nursing care to patients. Once you qualify as a Registered Nurse (Adult), you’ll have opportunities to work secondary care and primary health care. Registered Nurses (Adult) also have an operational role overseas, which includes the aeromedical evacuation of patients to hospitals in the UK.
In primary care, you’ll work as a practice nurse in a medical centre on an RAF base, focusing on health education and preventive medicine. You could help run smoking-cessation clinics, advise people on healthy lifestyles or run a drop-in clinic for people with everyday health problems. You could also carry out this role in tented accommodation overseas on operations or exercises.
In a secondary care role, you’ll be based in an NHS hospital as part of a military team. Most of our nurses work in A&E, critical care and other acute areas, looking after both military and civilian patients. There are also opportunities to work overseas either on one of our permanent bases or in a temporary hospital set up for the duration of an RAF mission.
In addition, you could volunteer for Tactical Medical Wing – which provides a 24-hour aeromedical evacuation service from abroad for UK troops and entitled civilians. Nurses can also request to work at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) Headley Court providing rehabilitation to military personnel.
Like most people in the RAF, you’ll probably move jobs every few years, and each job is known as a tour.
Your first tour
After you qualify as a Registered Nurse (Adult), you’ll be assigned to work within a military team in secondary health care based in an NHS hospital, this will be for your first 18 months as a qualified nurse to gain confidence and experience. After this you can choose to work in Primary Health Care, Aeromedical Evacuation or Rehabilitation.
Your training
Recruit training
Your career will start with up to 11 weeks recruit training at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. The course is designed to help you adjust to a military environment. As well as fitness and military training, you’ll also learn about the RAF lifestyle.
Specialist training
The RAF Student Nurse training takes place alongside student nurses from the Royal Navy and Army at Birmingham City University. The three-year course consists of a 12-months foundation phase followed by a two-year adult speciality branch programme with clinical placements in both Service and civilian areas. Student nurses graduate as Registered Nurses on Part 1 of the Nursing Midwifery Council register with BSc (Hons) in Nursing.
After you qualify, you’ll take a two-week military first aid course before getting your first assignment.
Ongoing development
Once you qualify as a Registered Nurse (Adult), you’ll have extensive opportunities for further professional development throughout your RAF career. You’ll have the chance to keep up-to-date in clinical practice, and we encourage you to attend nursing conferences and other training, including postgraduate level qualifications.
Your future
Prospects
You’ll initially join the RAF on a 22-year open engagement and be appointed to the rank of acting Corporal once you qualify. A year after qualification, you’ll be eligible for promotion to full Corporal. Further promotion to the rank of Sergeant and beyond is by competitive selection.
Transferable skills
As a Registered Nurse (Adult) in the RAF, you’ll have all the development opportunities and career prospects of your civilian counterparts, together with the chance to work around the world and gain unique nursing experience.
