    Penumbra has a Peer Support Service based in Craigmillar, Edinburgh providing formal peer support for people who experience a range of difficulties in living.

    Applicants should be able to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the role, be prepared to share their recovery story and to be non-judgemental and hopeful in their approach.

    Ideally you will have experience in this field, backed with an appropriate qualification or be willing to work towards one. Equally important is the ability to communicate effectively, a commitment to working as a part of a team.

    Job Description

    Job Title: Peer Support Worker

    Responsible To: Support Manager, Plan 2 Change Project

    Salary: Point 15 to 19 on Penumbra Pay Scale, currently £14,982 to £16,305 full time (pro rata for part time)

    Working Hours: Part time 7.25 hours per week.

    We offer excellent working conditions, 33 days annual leave pro ratincluding public holidays for part-time employees and a contributory pension scheme

    Special Conditions: Hours may include evenings and weekends.

    Job Summary
    To assist service users to establish and maintain a meaningful and fulfilling life in the community, by being a role model/ facilitator using own ‘lived experience’ of recovery.

    Responsibilities

    1. To establish a supportive relationship with each service user, enabling them to maximise their own resources in order to improve their quality of life.

    2. To share/teach coping and self management techniques.

    3. To be flexible and responsive to meet the changing needs of the service users and the organisation, within the agreed criteria.

    4. To work in cooperation with other members of the Support Team, and staff from other agencies.

    5. To participate in training activities and meetings as required.

    6. To uphold Penumbra’s Code of Practice.

    7. To be responsible for maintaining the relevant systems of documentation.




    Employee Specification – Peer Support Specialist

    Education/ Qualifications/ Training Essential · Good Level of secondary education Desirable· SVQ3 or equivalent · Completion of Peer Support Worker Training (e.g. Meta Services Peer Employment Training or other similar peer support training)
    Experience Essential· Personal experience of recovery from mental health problems · Experience of being in a supportive and enabling roleDesirable · Experience of a person-centred approach · Experience of working in the mental health field
    Skills and attributes Essential· Good interpersonal and team-working skills· Ability to share personal story of recovery in a professional manner· Ability to assist people to develop recovery plans (including determining ‘problems’, identifying ‘goals’ and setting objectives)· Ability and willingness to reflect on work practice and be open to constructive feedback· Ability to work in an enabling and creative way· Ability to manage stress and to plan and prioritise workloadDesirableo Experience of WRAP or other recovery/person centred planning toolso Knowledge of how the mental health and other health and social care systems operateo Knowledge of welfare benefits system
