Penumbra is a leading Scottish voluntary organisation working in the field of mental health. We provide an extensive range of services for adults and young people.
We are looking for a qualified Accountant who will head up our Finance Department within Penumbra, a Registered Charity with a turnover of £8m and 350 staff based across Scotland.

Responsible To: Director of Corporate Services
Salary: circa £35,000
Working Hours: 36.25 hours per week.
Location: Norton Park, Albion Road, Edinburgh. EH7 5QY
Leave: 38 days per annum including public holidays
Staff: 3 staff members report directly to the Head of Finance
Job Summary
The Head of Finance is responsible for:
· The maintenance of all of Penumbra’s financial records;
· Production of monthly Management Accounts;
· Assisting the preparation of annual Budgets;
· Assisting the preparation of statutory accounts and year end audit;
· Management of the Finance Team
Activities and Tasks
· Maintaining the finance system, both for Penumbra and Penumbra (Respite Care) Limited. This work involves:
1. Managing the Finance Department staff, so that they contribute effectively to the work of the department.
2. Ensuring that the monthly Payroll is run on time, and is checked to verify its completeness, accuracy and compliance with our procedures.
3. Checking that all staff expenses have been correctly processed, on time and in accordance with our procedures.
4. Ensuring that all subsidiary ledgers are up-to-date and closed out before monthly Management Accounts are prepared.
5. Creating, amending and deleting as necessary all nominal ledger Standard, Recurring and Reversing Journal Entries.
6. Reconciling all inter-company and intra-company balances before month-end closure.
7. Reviewing all balance sheet reconcilations.
8. Ensuring that critical payments are made on time, including Inland Revenue and Pension payments.
1. Distributing individual Cost Centre Management Accounts to budget holders.
2. Investigating reasons for major variances against budget and commenting on the results.
· Assisting the preparation of annual budgets, including developing individual cost centre and area budgets.
· Preparation of management accounts for funders
· Preparation of finance models for new business opportunities
· Maintaining schedules of regular property rental payments, including: issuing and amending standing order instructions.
· Maintaining the operation of Penumbra’s bank accounts, including:
1. Opening and closing of bank accounts and obtaining revised schedules of authorised cheque signatories.
2. Reviewing bacs transfer payment requests and then authorising them.
· Assisting in the preparation of the statutory accounts and with the year end audit
· Liaising with internal and external auditors.
· Providing training on financial systems and procedures for all relevant staff.
· Any other ad hoc duties as requested by the Director of Corporate Services.
Employee Specification – Head of Finance
Education/ Qualifications/ Training Essential· Member of a CCAB accountancy bodyDesirable· Holds a degree in a relevant subject.
Experience Essential· Has experience in managing a staff team.· Has experience in preparing management accounts and reconciliations, and presenting to senior management. · Has experience of using an integrated financial accounting system, such as Pegasus Opera II or equivalent.Desirable· Has previous experience of working in the voluntary sector, with an understanding of the issues involved in providing support to service users, whilst also satisfying the expectations of our Funders.· Has previous experience on preparation of accounts in accordance to Charity SORP 2005.
